A beginner's mystery series for different aged readers

Hotshot Puzzles

The Hotshot Puzzles spanned multiple authors through the 90s, all published by Oxford Press. Each book is written with the intention of teaching children to read - split into 4 reading levels each with different lengths and unique word counts - and they've been published in multiple language as a way to learn English.

With intriguing titles and coverart, each page contains colorful imagery interspliced with text, with a puzzle ending each double page. The puzzles are pretty rudimentary, and, because they're mainly to teach English, often are fairly literal ("What time is on the clock", "What is this person's name" etc), though some are quite interesting and well done.

The artwork ranges from between fully rendered, to simpler cartoony linework like the Usborne Puzzle Adventure series or Herge's Tintin.

From their synopsis: "All the titles in the "Hotshot Puzzles" series are original stories of mystery and adventure, designed to stimulate young, and possibly reluctant, readers. Every double page features a puzzle - which students have to solve before they can read on."
